In Defence Colony, Indiranagar, just behind a busy main road, stands a 30-year-old bungalow in the centre of a site measuring 90’x60’. Our long-standing client, a young entrepreneur moving into his first home, reached out to us to remodel the very same bungalow. Previously dark and compact, the bungalow has now been updated to better suit contemporary lifestyles through thoughtful and modest changes. The house’s original design presented some limitations like dark storage spaces, small unusable niches and tiny openings. We aimed to gently open the space to let in natural light by puncturing the ceilings and walls of the load bearing structure. These changes were met with their own structural challenges. For example, puncturing walls to create openings required additions of steel members which would act as lintels. Transitioning between spaces in the house were met with different types of openings, one of them being a small threshold between the living and the foyer and the other a breakfast counter between the kitchen and the dining.
